In creating a social media strategy for myself, I had to first decide on how I wanted to brand myself. Instead of limiting myself to only graphic design, I chose to broaden my expertise by labeling myself as a ‘creative.’ This way, I will be able to explore more areas of the creative process through different topics. I used social networking sites to get myself out there, mainly to promote my blog with I converted to a daily blog/personal portfolio. I am already a member of all the social networking sites I will use to brand myself, except one, Tumblr. Although I am already using these various forms of social media, I’m not using them to their full potential. That was another issue I had to deal with when decided exactly what I wanted my brand to say about me.

I’m sure everyone has, at one time or another, misplaced, lost, or broken their television remotes. Now, the iPhone app I have created might seem a little unnecessary and lazy to a person who rarely watches tv, but I know it will attract avid tv watchers!

The iRemote iPhone app acts as a sort of universal remote. The opening screen prompts you to choose the brand and model of television you own, and your cable provider. This allows you to sync your iPhone with your television. The second window shows an image of the remote assigned to your television. You can either use the actual image of the remote as a touch screen, or you can select certain areas of the remote to make them bigger and easier to use. Above, the numbers and volume/channel arrows has been selected to be enlarged for easier viewing.

Alright, alright, alright! I just have to share some great semi-recent news. I found out, through word-of-mouth, that a new restaurant was opening up right in downtown Austin specializing in all sorts of sausage. Now if you know anything about me you’d know that I have a weakness for hot dogs, sausage, brats, etc. (with a side of beer, of course). It’s so, I don’t know, American! A hot summer day at the ballpark kind of feel.

Frank, located on 4th and Colorado, serves up hot dogs, cold beer, and is a self-proclaimed purveyor of artisan sausage. GENIUS! Genius name, genius slogan, the obviously had fun with this one. Not to mention, their menu looks amazing as well.

So, you might be thinking “why is she blogging about restaurants, food, etc? It seems a little off-topic.”

Well, it’s not just the food that makes this place great, it’s also the detail that was put into the design of this place. A local Austin business, The Decoder Ring, is responsible for all of the design you see for the restaurant; logotype, iconography, collateral, etc. You should really check them out, here. Their client list is very impressive and they have a great modern, hip, yet classic style. I would have to say that this would be a my dream firm to internship at.

This place is already open guys! Go get some great food and enjoy great design!

JOBS VS GATES

As an introduction to the Apple vs. Microsoft/jobs vs. gates debate, I found the film we watched in class to be very interesting, but i might just be somewhat biased. I bought my first computer/laptop upon entering college. I decided to go with a macbook pro taking into consideration my future plans to study graphic design. I was impressed as how easy to use the interface was; such a different experience from waiting around, minute after minute, for my family computer to load, unfreeze, etc. I speak for myself in saying that I will never purchase a pc…EVER. I have been converted. But, I believe this debate is a very heated one. There are so many die-hard Apple fans, so many die-hard anti-Apple fans, and many non-fans that don’t even care. What’s very interesting to me is that even in the design school, I, very rarely, come across those few people who swear upon using and pc; “it’s the only way!” I think what we have here is a little competition. Both Apple, Inc. and Microsoft have gained loyal followers, mainly through the innovations in the varying platforms that they have developed. They must be doing something right.

Jobs: Cool Nerd
After reading the articles and watching the videos, I have a new understanding of the way both of these companies are organized. To be honest, I was very surprised to find that Steve Jobs was a tough bossman. For some reason I envisioned a very positive, open, loving work environment at Apple, Inc. But, it turns out that this is far from reality. The working environment and leadership style has impacted the company immensely. Apple gets millions of dollars worth of free advertising due to the tight lipped policy on new innovations. Employees aren’t able to even share information with their spouse or children! Rumor has it that Steve is a very hard person to impress, but in return, pushes his employees to come up with their best, most innovative ideas. It will be interesting to see what Apple, Inc. becomes when Steve Jobs leaves the company. He has definitely impacted the way people feel about computers.

Gates: Geeky Nerd
I have to admit I almost fell asleep watching the Bill Gate Biography, but it was an older movie so I’ll let it slide. Gates is definitely a huge nerd, and has a very different management style than Steve Jobs. As opposed to the tight lipped policy at Apple, Inc., employees working at Microsoft were encouraged to start blogs about upcoming products, there were no secrets. Microsoft, unlike Apples vertical integration, is a company that must release details of new innovations. Investors buy Microsoft products to use in their pc’s, and therefore, must modify simultaneously with Microsoft. Openness, for Gates and his company, is imperative. It was fun to see Bill Gates let loose at his annual “olympics” that he held annually while CEO at Microsoft.

Either way, it seems like both men have their heads on straight. Neither money nor rank pushed these men to succeed, it was only their passion for what they do.

I must admit, I’m not too thrilled about starting a blog, but I guess I asked for it when I enrolled in my Social Media course. It’s all very weird, sharing information about yourself with random people. So, as an introduction, hello all! My name is Morgan Bathe, and I’m a senior Communication Design major who is completely terrified of graduating this spring. Does anyone else feel unprepared? I love crafting, knitting, sewing, bookbinding; practically anything involving hand building. I love cute animals. I am a huge music lover and attend as many shows as possible. I mean, we’re so close to Austin you’d be a fool not to take advantage of the music scene. I love old country (George Jones, Hank Williams, Ray Price, just to name a few), and folk/indie music (such as the song below).

I love films as well. Some of my favorite directors include Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, and David Lynch). My guilty pleasures include really cheesy romantic comedies, jersey shore, Dolly Parton, and chocolate.

Most of the historical videos I’ve seen over the years dealing with the internet have been pretty confusing. The video we watch on Monday was no different. The actual make up of the internet, how it works, and how we are all connected is a little over my head. It’s still amazing to think how easy the internet has made things, though. If you look back, the Sears Roebuck catalog used to be nationally distributed and allowed consumers to order almost anything they needed through mail order. Of course this involved patience. Everything was very uniform. You probably had the same bedsheets, curtains, and dishware as everyone else. Now, with the help of the internet, we have the ability to purchase items, follow blogs, and find forms of entertainment that correspond with our personalities. The internet allows for personalization, which is very important aspect of human behavior.

As much as I love the idea of being in complete solitude, without my phone, without television, and without internet, I know it would never be possible. I sometimes see these tools as bothersome, but for the sake of staying connected, they make it pretty easy.
